"The Works" Wingtip Lighting Kit

Product Details

Ever since we launched The Essentials Flyleds kit we received a constant stream of emails asking "Do you do landing lights as well?". With the challenge duly set we spent a year researching and designing our landing light modules to come up with The Works kit.
We couldn't be more proud of the results, and more than six hundred Works kit sales later, our customers are in agreement!

Our landing lights use the best LEDs available from Cree, producing a minimum of 7200 lumens of light from both wings.
Rather than using simple reflectors, we use collimating lenses which gather all of the light from the LED and make a tight beam with very little spill. That means more photons are being thrown where it's needed; waaay out front and center!

This is the light thrown from the equivalent of just one wing, ie three light modules.
(And it's the view from the Flyleds office window, not a missed approach!)

For simplicity the LEDs are driven with a linear constant current power supply, rather than a switching-type supply. The result: No radio or intercom noise, ever. We haven't tried to suppress or filter the noise, there just isn't any being made to begin with!

Need taxi lights as well? You can also wire and aim the outer light module in each wingtip independently from the others for taxiing. Perfect for tail draggers!

The Works controller board can also turn on the strobe LEDs continuously so you get an additional flood of light off the ends of your wingtips. This helps to improve your peripheral vision and illuminate the taxiway edges and any four legged obstructions. Our customers tell us this is a really undersold and useful feature for identifying taxiway turnoffs.

The controller board also takes care of wig-wagging (flashing) your landing lights. Even if you're mostly a daytime VFR flyer, by wig-wagging your lights on every flight you will be seen coming for miles by both human and feathered pilots.

Some feedback from customer John B:

When I came in to Oshkosh on Wednesday morning, the air traffic controller called me "The RV with all the lights, rock your wings". They never called me by the aircraft color, just all the lighting. Pretty impressive for a bright sunny day.

"The Works" lighting kit:

  • Position lighting
  • Strobe lights
  • Landing lights
  • Taxi/Flood lights
  • WigWag function built in.
  • Match "The Works" kit with one of our tail light options and you're fully covered.

What was the price again?

Supplied as a kit of electronic parts (both left and right wings, plus a central controller board), you need to solder the strobe and position LEDs and other components onto the wing circuit boards and the controller board. We can build it for you, but hey, you built an entire aeroplane. You can do this too!
With a temperature controlled soldering iron and a fine tip*, you and your better half or your kids can assemble these kits in one or two evenings. They will be proud to have helped out on such a highly visible part of your plane.

Please read through the instructions available from the Information page to see how easy it is to put The Works kit together.
There is a video guide on assembling the landing lights here on YouTube. (More video guides to come).

"I just thought I’d let you know my 14 year old son who had no soldering experience soldered all the boards up on the weekend and did a great job. Your instructions were great and he even remembered to put the battery back in the smoke detector (after testing). We also tested them on the car battery and they are super bright!" Ryan M
(Ryan and his son built our Essentials Kit, but the process is identical.)

The landing lights are built around two independent circuit boards, and we have already done all the electronics on these. You just need to do some minor assembly: screws, glue, rivet some nutplates on and juggle some springs. Easy stuff!

If you have previously bought a Flyleds The Essentials kit (thank you!), please select the Upgrade Kit option and we will supply you with two new forward facing circuit boards and associated components for the strobe and position LEDs.

Please positively identify your wingtips using the information shown on this page before ordering.

Verbatim feedback from customer Boyd B:

I couldn't even tell if the original landing lights were on at night, now I light up the numbers half a mile out! More light, Better light, with about 1/4 the amps draw. I welcome the new millennium!

Feedback from customer James T:

Hi, Paul. I flew my first night sorties in my RV-6 and the lights are AWESOME! I swear I can see the runway numbers from a kilometer out on final. I feel like I'm in a 747, not a GA airplane!

We were honoured to receive this feedback from the owner of the red and white RV-8 below:

The Works lights are simply awesome. I've flown with them several times at night now and continue to be surprised every time I get close to the runway during my approach and see how much they light things up. It's the kind of illumination I'm used to in my day job (A320) but certainly not what I was used to in the stock Van's setup on the RV-8.

And a big Thank You to David Brown for his unprompted video review:

*(If you last used your soldering iron to melt the blue plastic off your wing skins, please spend $10 on a new tip!)
